Strengthening of existing MPAs:

  • Scientific and legal assessment.
  • Participatory workshops with key actors.
  • Creation of action plans and communication strategies.

    ‘The sum of all individuals is what will really produce results. When a large majority of the population is aware of the fragility and balance of the whole, we will be able to reverse the destruction we have set in motion.’

Expansion of the MPA network:

  • Identification of new areas of high ecological value.
  • Support for the establishment of new MPAs.
  • Improving connectivity with other areas in the Macaronesian region.

Optimising the multiple use of MPAs:

  • Promoting the sustainable use of MPAs in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

‘It is about living towards the future, contributing to building a clean, smart, quality-of-life alternative. We must not lose heart, we must move forward, be vigilant and keep our critical awareness alive, because the future has never been achieved, we have to do it from the present. It is a question of making the tourist industry coexist with the defence of the territory and our own culture. And this coexistence is possible, but, above all, it is necessary, obligatory if we are not to live with our backs turned to the future’.

  • Increased MPA coverage.
  • Strengthened economic and environmental sustainability.

  • Creation of a replicable model for other regions of the Eastern Central Atlantic.
  • Direct contribution to global marine conservation objectives.
