Conference
Marine Protected Areas in the
Eastern Central Atlantic
Analysis and Perspectives
- Date: 22 and 23 May
- Place: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
- Deadline for confirmation: Until full capacity is reached
Description of the event
In a context of increasing pressure on marine resources and ocean space due to traditional and emerging activities, it is urgent to find a sustainable balance between human development and the conservation of marine ecosystems. The ‘MPAs Canary Islands’ project, supported by Oceans 5, aims to contribute to the protection of 30% of the oceans by 2030, with 10% of strict protection, strengthening the network of MPAs in the Canary Islands and promoting their connection with the marine areas of the Eastern Central Atlantic.
This conference will be attended by experts, institutions and key actors, and will be an ideal space for sharing knowledge and defining replicable strategies for other regions.
Objectives of the meeting
- To analyse the current situation of MPAs in the Eastern Central Atlantic.
- Explore opportunities and challenges in their management.
- Facilitate knowledge exchange between key actors.
- Identify perspectives and define the role of MPAs in the conservation and sustainable management of marine ecosystems.
Structure of the Event
The sessions are organized into four thematic blocks:
- Block 1: Status of MPAs – Challenges and Opportunities
- Block 2: MPA Management
- Block 3: Social Interactions and Perceptions
- Block 4: Funding Strategies and MPA Valorization
This event serves as a platform for reflection and action, promoting a replicable reference model that can be applied in other regions while aligning with global marine conservation objectives.
